GM maize MON 810 banned in Germany! "I have today initiated morning that the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) imposed a safeguard clause under Section 20, paragraph 3 Genetic Engineering Act and Article 23 of the Deliberate Release Directive 2001/18/EC," said the Federal Minister for Food, Agriculture and consumer protection, Ilse Aigner, 14 April 2009 at a press conference in Berlin. "For the cultivation of MON810 in Germany is prohibited."
With imposition of the safeguard clause by the BVL against Monsanto, the suspension of the approval of MON810 is ordered. This is growing each and every other sale of seeds of maize MON810 inadmissible. "The states are immediately informed of this action and will monitor compliance with the ban," said Minister Aigner.
The decision took into account the Federal Minister Ilse Aigner and that now five Member States of the European Union legally appropriate protective measures for the MON810 maize have been adopted. Most recently, in late March of this year, Luxembourg held the safeguard clause.
